Vegetable oil candles for churches – fewer particles and gentler lighting

Live candles are an important part of church traditions and create a warm, calm and solemn atmosphere at services, baptisms, weddings and funerals. With vegetable oil candles, the church can keep the live flame while reducing particle pollution compared with traditional stearin candles.

At PJ Nordic we offer vegetable oil candles for churches that want a practical and gentler solution for the church's lighting – with consideration for the church room, the furnishings and the historic frescoes.

Why choose vegetable oil candles in the church?

Significantly fewer ultrafine particles

A Danish scientific study from 2017 shows that vegetable oil candles can emit substantially fewer ultrafine particles than traditional stearin candles.

In a measurement carried out at Lynge Church, two vegetable oil candles were compared with two traditional altar candles made of pure stearin. The average particle concentration measured was just 4,700 particles per ml of air when using oil candles, against 131,000 particles per ml when using stearin candles.

This corresponds to an approximately 96 % lower measured particle concentration under the conditions examined.

Better care for the church's frescoes and furnishings

Soot and ultrafine particles from live candles can over time contribute to soiling the church's walls, frescoes and historic furnishings. Frescoes are particularly sensitive, because small particles can penetrate porous surfaces and be difficult to remove.

By choosing vegetable oil candles with low particle emission, the church can reduce this burden and thereby help to preserve its cultural heritage.

Keeping the live flame and the church's traditions

With vegetable oil candles, the church does not have to give up the live flame. The candles can be used as an alternative to traditional altar candles and contribute to the familiar atmosphere in the church room.

A good choice for regular use

In churches where candles are lit frequently, the choice of light source can matter for the overall particle load over time. Vegetable oil candles are therefore particularly relevant for altar lighting and other places where live candles are used regularly.

Vegetable oil candles – with consideration for the church's values

Churches often hold irreplaceable historic and artistic values. The choice of light is therefore not only about appearance and atmosphere, but also about showing consideration for the building and its interior.

With vegetable oil candles from PJ Nordic, the church can combine live candles and tradition with a solution in which low particle emission is a key advantage.
